The gods' DNA? Empty The gods' DNA?

Post by Palladog on Sun Mar 21, 2010 7:59 pm

In one book, I think it was The Last Olympian, Rick Riordan wrote that the gods didn't have DNA (while writing about demigod relationships). I can understand that. What I don't understand is how Percy can have the same green eyes as Poseidon, when the gods don't have DNA! Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the books, but it just strikes me as a little wrong, when the eye color comes from the DNA...

What do you think?

A very good point that i thought of also, the only way i could explain it was by thinking at it like this:

The gods in effect are beings of pure energy, therefore as such some of their energy, their essense, is passed on to thier children and this energy gives the Demi-Gods their powers and shapes them like their parents.. This would also explain why the demigods children are said to be mortals (as far as i am aware that is) as this energy cannot be passed on as by the laws of physics energy cannot be created or destroyed and the energy is bound into the demigods.

(and as can be inturpreted from the chapter in Titan's Curse with Apollo's chariot not actualy being the sun: the laws of physics are true and even the gods act within them)

*note: my inturpretation of the novels may be entirely flawed and incorrect but this is my idea

Agreed, the books do overlook rather a few major things such as children having godly features and other implausible events: I being a bit of a pedant hate authors not explaining these flaws in books lol. but unless riordan bothers to explain it in anyway we will never know the stories version of how genetic information is passed along.

EDIT:

Also keep in mind that this is designed for like 8-10 yearolds (i know bit sad that i, a teenager am hooked) so Riordan whilst possibly accidently overlooking such a problem, could simply be avoiding a lengthly scientific explaination which no child who had not studied biology at a higher level would understand.. he also kind of avoids concepts such as Sex in general, once again for the age group i would assume.

well seeing as the gods hav no DNA that means they physically shouldn't exist... so that means that the demi-gods are half real half not real.... which means that the not real part of them gets passed down because matter cannot be created or destroyed... it can just be changed. so it is changed form being not real to being half not real enabling the similar features..

maybe the 'energy' (as veni-vidi-veci describes it as) was strengthened and brought into DNA when percy was born, because his mom is a mortal, who does have DNA

Rriiiiiggghhhtt...well...I think that...idk...I think some traits r just passed down. Eye color for example...or facial structure. Or even personallity. Kid of Zeus have bad tempers, eyes like the sky, and I'd I do say so...a tad stubborn. So....stuff like that...uk? That's my less scientific explanation
